Sounds You Never Want To Hear From Your AC

As your air conditioner ages, you might notice new things. Hopefully, the new things are good, such as an adjustable fan speed, which you did not see before or temperature reset features that you never realized as you were reading through the manual. However, if you realize something else that is not pleasant, you need to consult an HVAC technician immediately to check on the unit. One of the things you don’t want ever to notice or hear is sounds coming from your air conditioner. Any of these sounds coming from your air conditioner indicate that the unit has internal issues that should be addressed immediately.

Squealing or screeching

Screeching noises from the blower motor of your air conditioner are an indication of motor bearing issues or a bad belt. You need to hire a technician to repair belts; after all, belt repairs are not that expensive. You risk your blower failing to function in the long run if you don’t take action by repairing the belt as soon as you hear the squealing noises. Also, most blower motor compartments have oil ports that you can add lubricants, while others are sealed. You should lubricate the blower motor often to solve problems concerning noisy motors. Additionally, make sure you use the correct oil to lubricate the engine.

Rattling noise

Rattling noises can be extremely annoying, while other times barely noticeable. The noises are a sign of a loose bolt, screw, nut or other small components of your air conditioner. Rattling sounds are also an indication that your AC unit has broken off, which makes it vibrate on its bottom as the unit functions or is being caused by components that are too close to walls. You need to pay close attention to the origin of the rattling sounds because some can be fixed with a simple screwdriver twist, while others require a professional to check on the compressor.

Clicking and buzzing sounds

Buzzing and clicking sounds are usually a sign that the electrical system of the air conditioner is faulty. A continuous clicking sound indicates faulty or malfunctioned electrical signals. Buzzing sounds mostly mean that a wire of the AC unit is frayed or loose, which causes electricity to spark within the system. If you notice that your AC unit only produces a buzzing sound when triggered some settings in your control panel, then it could be an indication that your AC has a faulty component.

Banging noises

You should not be spooked when you hear banging noises from your AC unit. The sound could mean a few things, but the real issues underlie inside the air conditioner. A small component, such as a bolt, screw or spring might have gotten loose, and it gets thrown around the inside of the unit, or some parts require some tightening. Additionally, banging noises can be caused by broken parts in your compressor or as a result of an incorrect compressor mounting. Fortunately, these issues can easily be fixed by an HVAC technician.

Thwapping

If you notice a thwapping sound from your blower when it is operating, something could be stuck in the blower blades. It could also be an indication that some parts inside the housing that is getting in contact with the blower as it turns. You should not overlook a thwapping sound because it could be critical.
